PET Felt Acoustic Panels

To help you get the most out of your acoustic treatment, we’ve compiled the most common questions regarding the performance, safety, and application of PET felt boards.

1. What exactly is PET felt made of?

PET felt is a sustainable acoustic material made from 100% recyclable polyester fibers. A large percentage of these fibers (typically 60%–70%) comes from recycled plastic water bottles. The result is a dense, durable, and felt-like board that is both eco-friendly and high-performing.

2. How effective are these panels at reducing noise?

PET felt is excellent at reducing reverberation (echo).

  • Absorption: They have a high NRC (Noise Reduction Coefficient), meaning they "soak up" sound waves rather than letting them bounce off hard walls.

  • Soundproofing vs. Absorption: It is important to note that while these panels greatly improve the quality of sound inside a room, they are not designed to "soundproof" (stop sound from traveling between rooms). They are best for making speech clearer and reducing the "hollow" sound in a space.

3. Are the panels safe for indoor use?

Yes. PET felt is one of the safest materials for residential and commercial interiors:

  • Low VOCs: They are "low-emission" products, meaning they don't off-gas harmful chemicals into your home.

  • Non-Allergenic: Unlike older fiberglass insulation, PET felt does not contain itchy fibers or formaldehyde.

  • Fire Safety: Most PET panels are treated to meet Class A (ASTM E84) or Class B fire rating standards.

4. Can I hang pictures or shelves over the panels?

Yes, but with caution:

  • Lightweight items: You can use pins or "T-pins" to hang lightweight photos directly onto the felt (similar to a corkboard).

  • Heavy items: For shelves or heavy frames, you must drill through the felt and anchor your hardware directly into the wall/studs behind the panel. Do not rely on the felt itself to support heavy weight.

5. Do the panels smell?

New PET felt is virtually odorless. Unlike foam acoustic panels, which can have a strong chemical "new car" smell for several weeks, PET felt is heat-bonded without toxic glues, making it ready for use immediately after unboxing.

6. Can I use these in high-humidity areas like bathrooms?

While PET is naturally resistant to rot and mildew, we do not recommend installing them in areas with direct water contact or constant heavy steam (like a small, unventilated bathroom). In standard kitchens or laundry rooms, they perform perfectly well.

7. What if I want to remove them later?

Because the recommended installation uses high-tack construction adhesive, removal will likely cause some damage to the drywall's paper surface. You would need to scrape off the residue, patch the wall with joint compound, and repaint.

8. Can I paint PET felt panels?

It is possible, but not recommended. Painting the panels clogs the microscopic pores between the fibers, which significantly reduces their ability to absorb sound. If you want a specific color, it is best to purchase the panels in that factory-dyed shade
